Psalm 14:1
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. (Psalm 14:1)
Blinded eyes rarely see the impact the devil brings upon those who refuse to believe in the existence of an Almighty Creator; they give themselves over to the enemy's clutches because they are unaware of the way out of the devil's claws of death and despair; which begins in a faith in the Almighty Creator God who is able to sustain those who are tempted and deceived by Satan, and ends with the cross of Calvary soaked with the blood of our infinite Savior, Jesus Christ. When a Christian tries to explain the existence of God to an unbeliever through God's manifested and destined purpose for their life, considering the fact of Jesus Christ's death, burial, and resurrection as the focal point of all faith in the divine presence and sovereignty of the Almighty Creator God, hallelujah, the atheist tends to fall upon a lack of proof, a lack of evidence, and a lack of logic behind the mechanism of the possibility of God's infinite domain outside the realm of existence beyond this three-dimensional reality, which He made and sustains through His word, breath, life, and power. Through subtle dissonance and quaint phrases, atheists tend to fall upon their own intellect to give themselves over to their lusts, thus allowing the enemy, Satan, to take hold of their souls for the duration of their soon short life on this earth; and after their sojourn on earth, the devil will manifest itself as a real entity just as plainly as the existence of the Creator God, who is Jesus Christ; and they will attempt to throw away all pretense and intellectual power in order to attempt to give themselves over to their newfound faith in a real God, yet it will be too late for them, since the judgment of God and the mercy of God are not decided by the recipient during the time when grace is over, but are meted out by the divine sovereign ruler on His terms. It is our job as a Christian living in this present world to attempt to provide certain evidences, proofs, and logic to supersede the devil's plan: which is to bring all men into hell, the devil's rightful dwelling place, with it.
Hallmarks of the great men of faith have been the ability to attempt to sway men into the Kingdom of God through crafted words meant to spark an intellectual response from the hardened atheist coupled with the divine presence of the Holy Spirit, because the words alone will never amount to anything unless a passionate heart seeking the conversion of the lost is soon followed; for not by words were we converted, but by the power of the Spirit; and we were not only persuaded by the words of the apostles and prophets of the New Testament, including Jesus Himself, but by the direct line of love and grace and faith supplied to us by the outpouring of God's Holy Ghost upon our listless and lost lives. We need to keep Paul in mind, who did not use great swelling words, nor did Paul use man's wisdom, but he let the power of the Spirit speak for Himself; the Holy Spirit will use any attempt a man who wisely uses the word of God to try to persuade a man to fear God, and through this cause He will send the Comforter to do His work, hallelujah. Let us put our hands to the plow and try to win the lost for the sake of Jesus Christ, because eternity's hands are open and waiting for the reception of its fruits, whether it be rotten fruit for the depths of a burning hell, or the ripe fruit purified by the fire and trial of the temptations in this life destined for the eternal heaven in God's glory through Jesus Christ.
The existence of God is usually refused by the atheist for one main reason: their works are evil and corrupt; for in Psalm 14:1, the Holy Spirit, speaking through David, proclaimed, 'The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.' However, the atheist will refuse to use the Bible as a reference point because the proposed author (in the mind of the atheist, God as the author of the Bible is a proposition; but for the Christian, it is an irrefutable fact: God's authorship and stamp of approval is over the divine library of the Holy Scriptures) is a nonexistent being; so, with this in mind, it may appear improper and rude to tell the atheist the Biblical reason for their denial of the existence of God, because the statement would imply the atheist's implicitly evil heart and corrupt works, which could either enflame the atheist into a rage or strike through the atheist's heart, thereby quieting the atheist's soul to receive more of the counsel of God. We should always start with the divine word of God when dealing with any unconverted man or woman, but some within the church may claim the word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword, so it must be carefully used with wisdom so as to not divide apart the spirit and the soul of anyone who hides their soul from the fear of God. The Holy Spirit will lead you and guide you into all wisdom, so if you would use the word of God with the atheist, it may help to declare the Bible's truth concerning the issue of atheism first in order to lie down the foundation of your stance and viewpoint, which truly is not a subjective opinion based on your own circumstances and values, but lie down by the stance and viewpoint of a God who is not subject to our own thoughts, feelings, or words, for God does not change His way for the sake of His disobedient creation. When this declaration from the Bible is made to the atheist, it is the atheist's decision to either refuse the counsel of Scripture or to inquire further about what this divine book says about the existence of God; in either case, there are many methods which may be given to an individual from which the Christian may lead the atheist into the path of righteousness through faith in the blood of Jesus Christ shed on the cross and faith in the divine resurrection of God's Son from physical death: the Gospel is our source of life, and it is to this destination which we lead any prospective sinner from the wages of sin into the Lord's divine plan and method.
For the atheist who desires to hear more of the word of God, Genesis 1:1 declares without any definite reason or any definite proof, 'In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.' The Bible, as stated by many theologians in the past, does not give any apology for its declaration of the existence of God, because purpose of the Bible is not to present a case in the dialectic or argumentative style, but declares emphatically the truth of God's existence without explaining its position; it says it, and the reader must accept it; the Bible declares God, but does not offer the reader a possible philosophical argument against the nonexistence of God. If an atheist requires more than the word of God, the book of Romans tells us the creation declares the glory of God, the book of Psalms tells us the heavens declare the glory of God; however, the atheist will once again refute the testimony of creation, because the origin of the idea comes from the Bible. With these individuals, it is best to let the mighty hammer of God's Holy Spirit descend on them and break their hearts of stone before any progress can be made upon these wearying souls. The best way to break up the fallow ground of their hardened heart comes from an individual committing acts of benevolent kindness upon the hardened atheist, which will pour over their heads like water over hot coals. After they see the goodness of God, they will more likely receive the word of God. The second best way to break up the fallow ground of a hardened heart of stone is through the pressure of the Holy Spirit; giving the sinner no room to hide, no room to breathe, no room for refuting or refusing the facts of God's existence. Pouring the fire of God over their soul by presenting the Gospel message for an atheist hardened by the sins committed by the disobedient soul will ring the truth of the existence of God and the faith of Jesus Christ in the ears of the soul running from God. The fruit of laboring in this way will not seem evident, and will even be discouraged by other members of the church, but the lasting effect of truth being knocked into the hearts of anyone always produces the fruit from which the seed was planted by the diligent sower of God's word.
In order for anyone to spiritually discern and judge the Bible's solid declarations of self-stated facts, one must be born of the Spirit. When you were born, did you believe you had a mother or father? Of course not, because the faculties of faith were not present in your soul, since you were just learning to use your propensities for judgment and knowledge. Can the same be said of the new birth? for it is God who breathes His life into you; however, do you need to believe in the existence of the Heavenly Father in order to participate in His new birth? The ways of the world are not the ways of the Father in Heaven; we are born through faith just as Abraham had his faith counted for righteousness. It can be implied by the statement itself that if we desire to be born of God, we must believe God exists. Any atheist who desires to be born again must automatically declare the existence of God. However, how can we bring an atheist to the desire of being born of God's Spirit? One of the best ways is through the threefold testimony outlines by Jesus Christ during His ministry on earth: when people saw Jesus die on the cross without complaining, without murmuring, and without writhing about in selfishness, nor desiring to end His suffering on the cross, they saw the actions of the Savior at death as the best possible statement concerning His spiritual birth; also, His miracles profoundly proclaim His divine birth; the miracle of Christian's moral lives filled with the good fruits of righteous character is enough of a miracle to prove the new birth to a world filled with sin and wickedness from an immoral populace set upon fulfilling the lusts of their flesh; also, the statement of John the Baptist concerning Jesus' spiritual birth served as another witness to His divine birth; and other people can solidly declare another Christian's righteousness through their actions, whether it be in good spirits or not, but the fact of their changed life, their changed heart, and their changed actions speaks volumes to anyone, whether they be for or against Christ. These three main testimonies can prove the new birth to those outside of Christ, but whether the atheist will accept these as proof for God's existence remains to be seen; for the atheist must have their solid heart broken by the Spirit of God before any progress can be made, and that may require the ultimate testimony and witness: martyrdom.
Have you died to tell another about Jesus Christ? Have you lived your life filled with the character of God, or filled with the good works and fruits God requires of you? I propose no new arguments to fill the logical minds of atheists, for we cannot turn the hearts of atheists with clever words, although words can be used to convert the souls of men; words alone will fail, but words coupled with the work of the Spirit will yield the peaceable fruit of conversion and place in your crown the right jewel Jesus will bestow upon you for winning a soul into the Kingdom of God. May Jesus Christ give all Christians who declare His Holy Name the power of the Spirit with all atheists to proclaim His truth regardless of their specialty or creed. Also, beware of the wolves, because some atheists have given themselves over to the devil, and their main purpose in life is to destroy a Christian's faith. Understand, it is the devil who is using this person, so hating the individual will do no good; hate the devil, and work at winning the soul into God's Kingdom, but do not yield yourself to any point which the Bible clearly proclaims as Gospel truth. Stick to your guns, so to speak, and use the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, the Holy Bible, and fix your eyes on Jesus Christ, and you will not worry about arguing with atheists, but you will start winning those who refuse to believe in God into the Kingdom of God.
